Do you need a ticket just to see it?

No. Trevi Fountain stands in a public piazza. You can walk up, look at it, and leave without buying anything. There is no ticket desk, no timed entry, and no skip-the-line lane for the fountain itself. Products that sell a "Trevi Fountain entry ticket" are selling a guided stop at a free monument, or entry to the archaeological rooms next door.

The crowd is the real cost. Mid-morning to late afternoon the basin is packed. Early morning and after dark are calmer, which is why the night walk exists. If you only want the photograph, go at 7am and spend nothing.

Which one should you book?

• Book nothing if you only want to see the fountain. It is free from the piazza.
• Book the underground tour if you want the only real ticket next to Trevi: the aqueduct and rooms under the district, from €32.

The underground is a different site

Vicus Caprarius, the "City of Water", sits a few metres from the fountain and is ticketed. A guide takes you down to the remains of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct that still supplies Trevi, plus an imperial domus. That is a 40-minute visit, not a substitute for seeing the fountain, and it does not put you underneath the statues themselves.

Night tour or daytime combo?

The sunset walk is the one to book if you care about the light. Trevi, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona are all outdoor and look better after the stone is lit. The Pantheon is usually an exterior stop on evening departures because the interior has closed.

The daytime combo is the cheaper first-visit pick and the one that can go inside the Pantheon on group options. Neither walk includes the underground aqueducts. Most options include free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
